Focus on Good Things.......when you need a break from serious stuff

This is Farley and me, in front of the Oyster Shack and Mt Daniel

I grew up in Vancouver and moved to Squamish in 1978 with my wife Pam. We have three adult kids, Graeme, Naomi, and Nathan. We have the requisite photo albums and hundreds of negatives and prints of our family growing up.  Soccer games, dance recitals, bike races, Christmas concerts, summer at the cabin – countless rolls of film.

My photography journey started in grade 11 with black and white film, a Konica Auto-Reflex T, and the dark room at Winston Churchill Secondary.  Mr. Rand (the Graphic Design Teacher) was my photography mentor in those early years.

Many thousands of images latter, I still enjoy the craft.  I don't long for the old days of film - dark rooms, developers and fixers, and manual focus cameras.  The convenience of a computer and printer in my home to get an image to a print is a wonderful thing.  Nevertheless, I’m a visual learner who also learns mostly by doing, and learning to navigate the details and nuances of digital photography and printing is a tension in the creative process.  Ironically, there is a certain amount of ‘tech’ savvy needed to produce a good print.

These days, being retired, I spend more time on images, prints and framing than I ever could when I was parenting, teaching and coaching. In the summer, our new sailboat, Nakia, takes us all over the inside waters of the Georgia Straight, thus the watery, coastal theme of many images.

A dream is to do a bit of travelling with Pam, away from BC, maybe even to Europe, and enjoy the camera in a completely foreign place. Our youngest son Nathan and his wife Valerie live in Montreal so we hang out there at least once a year. As well, a recent trip to St Lucia, The Grenadines, Martinique and Grenada rendered some images in a wonderful new place.

I hope you enjoy browsing through these images. And, I'd love to make a high quality print for you if there's an image that would make a wall look better in your place.
